World Oral Health Day 2023

The power of prevention in fighting oral diseases and maintaining overall health

March 20th marks the celebration of two important global events: the International Day of Happiness and World Oral Health Day.

The International Day of Happiness was established by the United Nations in 2012 to recognize the importance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of people around the world. This day reminds us of the importance of positive relationships, kindness, and meaningful connections with others.

Similarly, World Oral Health Day, established by the FDI World Dental Federation, is celebrated annually on March 20th to raise awareness about the importance of oral health and hygiene. This year’s theme is “Be Proud of Your Mouth,” emphasizing the significance of maintaining good oral health for overall well-being.

At Unspoken Smiles, a nonprofit organization that provides access to dental care for children in underserved communities, we understand the critical role that oral health plays in overall health. Poor oral health can lead to numerous health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

The power of prevention in fighting oral diseases cannot be overstated. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups can prevent oral health problems from developing and becoming more severe. Additionally, a healthy diet that is low in sugar and high in nutrients can also help maintain good oral health.

Unfortunately, access to dental care is not always readily available, particularly for low-income families and those living in underserved communities. This lack of access to dental care can lead to untreated oral health problems, which can have severe consequences for both oral and overall health.

As a nonprofit organization, Unspoken Smiles aims to bridge the gap in dental care access for children in underserved communities in the Americas. By providing preventative dental care, oral health education, and community outreach programs, we strive to empower children and their families to take control of their oral health.

In honor of World Oral Health Day, we encourage everyone to prioritize their oral health and take steps towards maintaining a healthy smile. Brush and floss regularly, visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings, and maintain a healthy diet. Together, we can work towards a world where everyone has access to quality dental care and can enjoy the benefits of good oral health.
