UNSPOKEN SMILES is accepting applications for undergrad / graduate students to represent UNSPOKEN SMILES as a designated NGO youth rep at the United Nations. This is an unpaid volunteer position for students interested in diplomacy and international affairs. NGO youth delegates work with UNSPOKEN SMILES’ primary representatives at the UN to help foster the team’s mission of helping young people become global citizens by providing opportunities for them to engage with the UN’s global agenda. This position involves assisting the UNSPOKEN SMILES UN team (the primary rep and another youth rep) with organizing on campus events to engage the UNSPOKEN SMILES community with the NGO/UN community and attending high-level UN briefings, NGO briefings, participating special days at the UN like International Day of Peace and World Press Freedom Day, UN Academic Impact events and more. Youth delegates will qualify to receive an official UN /NGO security badge and will have an opportunity to observe the work of the UN and its associated NGOs.

UNSPOKEN SMILES UN Youth Reps will have the opportunity to build Unspoken Smiles’ organizational capacity, while gaining access to a wide network in the international development sector.
Responsibilities of the Youth Delegate Position Include:
- Attend (3) Thursday briefings per month organized by the UN Department of Public Information and write a thoughtful recap to be shared with the Fordham community. You will attend other UN networking events/meetings on Thursdays.
- Meet with members of the Fordham UN rep team to design a UN related project or event on campus in collaboration with other student clubs on campus
- Participate in planning meetings and networking with other UN DPI NGO youth representatives at the UN. Must attend monthly meeting with the UN DPI NGO Youth reps group at UN HQ.
- Work approx 5-10 hours a week with Fordham NGO representatives at the UN to blog, build our social media presence, engage Fordham with the UN.
- Create and maintain a Fordham UN newsletter through MailChimp
- Entrepreneurial spirit needed that passionate about organizing meetings with clubs at Fordham to inform them about Fordham’s Impact Initiative UN group and get them connected to UN opportunities
Applicants must be a currently enrolled students ages 18- 32 years old (UN definition of “youth”) who will be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program. Students should have full availability every during the year and live in/or close to New York City so that transportation to and from the UN is reasonable and manageable. Youth delegates are expected to be culturally competent, dedicated, have a diplomatic personal style, excellent writing and communication skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with peers, senior NGO reps/UN officials and others, and ideally would be available to serve full year (for consistency). Fluency in another language helpful but not required.

Most interviews at UNSPOKEN SMILES are conducted by video conference to allow for flexibility for both staff and the candidate. When there is a request for an in-person interview, People Operations will work closely with the candidate to ensure the cost of travel is covered.

Positions at UNSPOKEN SMILES are generally open to candidates based on the candidate’s ability to work in the country where the position is located (United States or Costa Rica). A small number of roles are open to international candidates, for whom UNSPOKEN SMILES would support in accessing work authorization and the appropriate visa/residency status. If a role is open to international candidates, that will be stated on the job posting. National candidates (applicants who are citizens/residents of the country in which a job is located) are encouraged to apply for any position located in their country for which they meet the criteria.
We generally do not sponsor US visas for international applicants. Visas for positions based in other countries are considered on a case-by-case basis.
